This page will be a "work in progress" as I try to find time to pass on some helpful information.  Information below is mostly for "newer" breeders.  Also, if I give company names, I am not endorsing those companies, just trying to make it easier (for you) since I've already done all the research and "leg work".  Also, I may not be able to keep subjects in a "perfect" order cuz this isn't like a Word page where things can get moved around by copy/pasting.

First, please keep all the Dachshund breeders (and all others) who have been terribly hurt and devastated by all the tornadoes in your hearts and prayers.  It hurts me to think how many wonderful Doxie people may be suffering.  There are/were a bunch of good breeders in those affected states.

One of my most-used products is something sold by Home Depot, called a Cable Cuff.  They're orange, usually found near hardware/tools, and they come in several sizes.  I have lots and lots of them.  The small ones are great for attaching X-pens (which I have many sections of, after taking several of them apart).  I still use "round eye bolt snaps" anywhere low down where a dog could chew, but the cable cuffs are so much easier to use on higher elevations.  They are great for securing gates, etc.   When I take puppies in a crate to the Vet, the crate goes on the passenger seat.  I wrap the seat belt around the crate, secure it into locking device, and then take a medium-sized Cable Cuff to secure the crate handle to the seat belt.  That way, if I have to slam on the brakes, the crate is secured to the seat belt.  I keep several of those cuffs in the car---you'll need to take them off when you have passengers cuz they don't like that "orange thing" dangling on their seat belt in front of their chests!

When worming puppies (and their mommy) keep a "reserve" of worming-only bedding, etc.  The worming medication in the puppy poop stains terribly, and Clorox (bleach) will not remove the stains.  Once the medication works it way out of the puppies, you can use your nice bedding again.

I use Nemex 2 on my first 2 wormings, at 3 weeks and 5 weeks.  (There are other good wormers available.)  At week 7, I use Safe-guard Canine Dewormer, which by the way, is safe for pregnant and lactating bitches.  It will be given for 5 days because it is now recommended for Giardia besides the roundworms.  Birds carry Giardia and they continually poop on my deck, from mid-May throughout the summer, as they fly into the evergreen trees beyond the deck.  Several of my dogs have tested positive for Giardia, so besides cleaning up all bird droopings on the deck, all my adults will be getting the Safe-guard treatment containing Fenbendazole.  (Metronidazole is no longer recommended.)  I will still worm once a year with Drontal Plus.

I use Albon liquid.  It makes it easier to write the dosages inside the top lid.  "First day=full, then 1/2 dose.  2 lbs = 1 cc; 4 lbs = 2 cc; 5 lbs = 2.5 cc; 10 lbs = 5 cc; 15 lbs = 7.5 cc".  When I open a new package/bottle, I rewrite than info on new lid.

Convert measurements:

  1 cc = 1 ml
  1 tsp = 5 cc/5 ml

Are all online pet pharmacies safe?  No.  Some carry products made in China, but the packaging looks the same as US products. Prescriptions ordered through my vet have to be through Oregon-approved online Pharmacies.
